What is Diary Study:

A diary study evaluates the user experience as self reported and documented by him/her in a diary. This method provides good insight to understanding user interaction over a period of time. Users events, thoughts, reactions, frustrations and patterns can typically be revealed using this approach. A video camera and also be used instead of a diary (camera study).
