UX Visionaries: Rikki Teeters

Welcome to the 2nd installment of our series, “UX Visionaries: Shaping Tomorrow’s Experiences.”

Rikki Teeters is a visionary UX Design Leader, author, and speaker dedicated to shaping the future of human-centered technology. With over 15 years of experience in design and leadership, she currently serves as a UX Leader at Amazon, guiding teams to create meaningful, ethical, and innovative user experiences. As the author of Conscious UX: Leading Human-Centered Design in the Age of AI, Rikki blends memoir, design strategy, and ethical foresight to inspire leaders navigating AI-driven futures. She is passionate about conscious leadership, mentorship, and building systems that honor creativity, inclusivity, and the profound human experience at the heart of design.

As a leader deeply committed to ethical and human-centered technology, Rikki is uniquely positioned to discuss the rapid integration of AI into UX. Let’s hear her perspective on how this trend is not only accelerating our work but also challenging us to lead with more intention than ever before.

One Emerging Trend in UX

The most fascinating emerging trend in UX is how generative AI is transforming the entire design process, not just the visual aspects. The right AI tools can now accelerate everything from strategy and user story creation to high-fidelity UI design, imagery, video, and even user research. This allows a 200-hour design and development process to be completed in just 20 hours with high-quality, production-ready results. This isn’t a future vision; it’s happening now and will fundamentally redefine UX as both a craft and an industry.

Biggest Challenge for UX Teams

The most universal challenge is the undervaluing of UX. Many organizations still treat UX as “just UI,” ignoring the research, strategy, and systems thinking that make it truly impactful. This mindset is dangerous in the age of generative AI, which is already capable of mid-to-senior-level UI work. As AI becomes more widely available, the need for pure UI roles will diminish. To stay relevant, UX leaders must actively redefine and communicate the value of a holistic UX approach, integrating research, strategy, and cross-disciplinary creation into their skillsets. Otherwise, many roles will be automated out.

How UX is Evolving and Advice to Stay Ahead

Within three years, UX will be almost unrecognizable. AI will change our tools, processes, and even our team structures. Large, hierarchical teams will be replaced by smaller, centralized groups of multi-skilled experts who can move from idea to working product in days, not months. The lines between UX design, UI design, front-end development, research, and product management will blur, creating hybrid roles.

My advice for teams to stay ahead is simple: learn AI now. Experiment with it, understand its capabilities and limitations, and decide how you want to use it—whether as a creative superpower or as a tool to advocate for what must remain human-led. The time to engage isn’t “someday”—it’s already here, and those who start now will thrive in this new AI-powered landscape.

Conclusion

We hope Rikki’s journey and insights inspire you. Stay tuned for our next feature in the “UX Visionaries: Shaping Tomorrow’s Experiences” series, where we will continue to spotlight influential leaders who are shaping the future of user experience.
