Validation Testing

Also known as summative user research, user validation testing occurs when you’ve completed the design phase of your app, site, or product.

Unlike formative assessments, in which the intended audience is developers themselves, summative approaches look for feedback from end-users.

Common methods Key Lime Interactive uses to collect this feedback include:

  • In-lab usability testing. In-lab testing looks to evaluate your product in a controlled setting. This is a great way to test basic usability features and ensure that applications meet key metrics for wide release.
  • Eye-tracking and biometrics. Eye tracking and biometrics provide more in-depth data for verification and validation in testing. By monitoring what users are looking at — and how their bodies are responding — you can pinpoint potential areas of confusion or frustration.
  • Benchmarking and longitudinal testing. Benchmarking helps evaluate your software against a set of defined criteria to ensure it meets basic usability expectations. Paired with longitudinal testing, companies can ensure that new software or website versions offer at least the same usability as their predecessors.

No matter how feedback is collected, however, the goal remains the same: to verify and validate that solutions are ready for public release by evaluating overall usability.

Where’s the Value in Validation Testing?

Comprehensive validation testing offers several advantages for your business.

First is gathering data that speaks to the value of your service or software — is there a market need? Does your solution fulfill that need? If so, this data can be used to inform sales and marketing initiatives. If not, user feedback can help determine where your solution needs improvement.

In addition, verification and validation help create a roadmap for ongoing improvements. Even if your software passes initial usability checks, there’s always room for improvement. Updated versions with new features or improved UX/CX can help generate even more user engagement. Regular summative assessments can help ensure that new iterations offer a marked improvement over existing applications — and that they meet user expectations.
